“Drowsy Chaperone” will start its nationwide tour in September 2007. The first show will be held at Elgin Theater in Toronto. It will run in about 30 cities across America. In Los Angeles, it will run at the Ahmanson Theater. The original cast members of this Broadway show, Georgia Engel and Bob Martin, will perform in Toronto. These actors were the ones to originate the roles of Mrs. Tottendale and the Man in Chair, respectively. It’s not certain whether Martin will perform in other cities as well. There is still time to declare the final cast of the show.
“Drowsy Chaperone” started in 1999 as a spoof of old songs. It was created for the stag party that was to be held before the wedding of Bob Martin and Janet Van De Graaff, imminent theater personalities. The first version of this show consisted of music forms that were popular between 1920s and 1940s. The role Man in Chair was not yet created.
During the Toronto Fringe Festival, the show was given a new appeal. Martin became the co-writer and created the role of Man in Chair, who is the narrator for the show. The original star cast included fine actors like Bob Martin, Sutton Foster, Jason Kravits, Georgia Engel, Edward Hibbert, Eddie Korbich, Beth Leavel, Jennifer Smith, and Danny Burstein.
After the Fringe Festival, David Mirvish, the owner and producer of Toronto Commercial Theater, was so mesmerized by this comedy that he asked to expand the production at Theater Passe Muraille, which was a non-profit one with 160 seats. He even endured the cost of the production.
“Drowsy Chaperone” was an instant hit at this theater. It even gained appreciation from the critics. This encouraged Marvin to finance the further expansion of the show’s script. The result was a main stage version of “Drowsy Chaperone” in 2001, at Toronto’s Winter Green Theater that has 1000 seats.
The show continued to get noticed by renowned Broadway personalities and was shown in most of the major theaters. Every where the show went, applaud and the good earnings went along with it!
After 32 versions of “Drowsy Chaperone” (phew!), this ever-entertaining Broadway show opened at the Marquis Theater on May 1, 2006. The latest version is directed as well as choreographed by Casey Nicholaw. This show still runs here.
